Eigenlicht is the uniform dark grey background that many people report seeing in the absence of light. Eigenlicht is perceived as lighter than a black object in normal lighting conditions, because contrast is more important to the visual system than absolute brightness.

In the absolute absence of light, not everything is as dark as we think.

The creative process for this work was particularly challenging, because the whole cast was not able to rehearse together until 2 days before the show. Lucía worked out various isolated rehearsal sessions throughout November and December, creating individual material, composing phrases for unison material, putting together duos and trios, all of which were woven together during production week. Lucía used a variety of choreographic tools ranging from very detailed, complex phrases based on Laban’s Cube, to more image-based composition, all of which were designed in relation to the extensive research she has carried out for her doctoral thesis that investigates the spectator’s experience of contemporary dance.
